  • One fascinating lady==you’ll be surprised

It all started with a skin flick.

In 1933, a beautiful, young Austrian woman took off her clothes for a movie director. She ran through the woods, naked. She swam in a lake, naked. Pushing well beyond the social norms of the period, the movie also featured a simulated orgasm. To make the scene “vivid,” the director reportedly stabbed the actress with a sharp pin just off-screen.

The most popular movie in 1933 was King Kong. But everyone in Hollywood was talking about that scandalous movie with the gorgeous, young Austrian woman.

Louis B. Mayer, of the giant studio MGM, said she was the most beautiful woman in the world. The film was banned practically everywhere, which of course made it even more popular and valuable. Mussolini reportedly refused to sell his copy at any price.

The star of the film, called ‘Ecstasy’, was Hedwig Kiesler. She said the secret of her beauty was “to stand there and look stupid.” In reality, Kiesler was anything but stupid. She was a genius. She’d grown up as the only child of a prominent Jewish banker. She was a math prodigy. She excelled at science. As she grew older, she became ruthless, using all the power her body and mind gave her.

Between the sexual roles she played, her tremendous beauty, and the power of her intellect, Kiesler would confound the men in her life, including her six husbands, two of the most ruthless dictators of the 20th century, and one of the greatest movie producers in history.

Her beauty made her rich for a time. She is said to have made – and spent – $30 million in her life. But her greatest accomplishment resulted from her intellect, and her invention continues to shape the world we live in today.

You see, this young Austrian starlet would take one of the most valuable technologies ever developed right from under Hitler’s nose. After fleeing to America, she not only became a major Hollywood star, her name sits on one of the most important patents ever granted by the U.S. Patent Office.

Today, when you use your cell phone or, over the next few years, as you experience super-fast wireless Internet access (via something called “long-term evolution” or “LTE” technology), you’ll be using an extension of the technology a 20- year-old actress first conceived while sitting at dinner with Hitler.

At the time she made Ecstasy, Kiesler was married to one of the richest men in Austria. Friedrich Mandl was Austria’s leading arms maker. His firm would become a key supplier to the Nazis.

Mandl used his beautiful young wife as a showpiece at important business dinners with representatives of the Austrian, Italian, and German fascist forces. One of Mandl’s favorite topics at these gatherings – which included meals with Hitler and Mussolini – was the technology surrounding radio-controlled missiles and torpedoes. Wireless weapons offered far greater ranges than the wire-controlled alternatives that prevailed at the time.
Kiesler sat through these dinners “looking stupid,” while absorbing everything she heard.
As a Jew, Kiesler hated the Nazis. She abhorred her husband’s business ambitions. Mandl responded to his wilful wife by imprisoning her in his castle, Schloss Schwarzenau. In 1937, she managed to escape. She drugged her maid, snuck out of the castle wearing the maid’s clothes, and sold her jewelry to finance a trip to London.

(She got out just in time. In 1938, Germany annexed Austria . The Nazis seized Mandl’s factory. He was half Jewish. Mandl fled to Brazil. Later, he became an adviser to Argentina ‘s iconic populist president, Juan Peron.)

In London, Kiesler arranged a meeting with Louis B. Mayer. She signed a long-term contract with him, becoming one of MGM’s biggest stars. She appeared in more than 20 films. She was a co-star to Clark Gable, Judy Garland, and even Bob Hope. Each of her first seven MGM movies was a blockbuster.

But Kiesler cared far more about fighting the Nazis than about making movies. At the height of her fame, in 1942, she developed a new kind of communications system, optimized for sending coded messages that couldn’t be “jammed.” She was building a system that would allow torpedoes and guided bombs to always reach their targets. She was building a system to kill Nazis.

By the 1940s, both the Nazis and the Allied forces were using the kind of single- frequency radio-controlled technology Kiesler’s ex-husband had been peddling. The drawback of this technology was that the enemy could find the appropriate frequency and “jam” or intercept the signal, thereby interfering with the missile’s intended path.

Kiesler’s key innovation was to “change the channel.” It was a way of encoding a message across a broad area of the wireless spectrum. If one part of the spectrum was jammed, the message would still get through on one of the other frequencies being used. The problem was, she could not figure out how to synchronize the frequency changes on both the receiver and the transmitter. To solve the problem, she turned to perhaps the world’s first techno-musician, George Anthiel.

Anthiel was an acquaintance of Kiesler who achieved some notoriety for creating intricate musical compositions. He synchronized his melodies across twelve player pianos, producing stereophonic sounds no one had ever heard before. Kiesler incorporated Anthiel’s technology for synchronizing his player pianos. Then, she was able to synchronize the frequency changes between a weapon’s receiver and its transmitter.
On August 11, 1942, U.S. Patent No. 2,292,387 was granted to Antheil and “Hedy Kiesler Markey,” which was Kiesler’s married name at the time.

Most of you won’t recognize the name Kiesler. And no one would remember the name Hedy Markey. But it’s a fair bet than anyone reading this newsletter of a certain age will remember one of the great beauties of Hollywood’s golden age ~Hedy Lamarr. That’s the name Louis B. Mayer gave to his prize actress. That’s the name his movie company made famous.

Meanwhile, almost no one knows Hedwig Kiesler – aka Hedy Lamarr – was one of the great pioneers of wireless communications. Her technology was developed by the U.S. Navy, which has used it ever since.
You’re probably using Lamarr’s technology, too. Her patent sits at the foundation of “spread spectrum technology,” which you use every day when you log on to a wi-fi network or make calls with your Bluetooth-enabled phone. It lies at the heart of the massive investments being made right now in so-called fourth-generation “LTE” wireless technology. This next generation of cell phones and cell towers will provide tremendous increases to wireless network speed and quality, by spreading wireless signals across the entire available spectrum. This kind of encoding is only possible using the kind of frequency switching that Hedwig Kiesler invented.

  • Copyright and Copywrong

WANThe hotly contested trial between Oracle and Google has produced an interesting and controversial decision. The result is what happens when attempting to ask a non-technical person to decide the answer to a technical  issue. Although a best attempt was made, the decision is not without issues.

We have yet to see the definitive written decision and the devil will be in the details. The decision is likely narrowly written and will [hopefully] be without the broad interpretation which is currently being aired.

Google ‘may’ have escaped this time around, but ethically they have failed.

Can an API be copyrighted. The correct answer is YES. If the answer is NO, then the question is wrong.

The specific case of JAVA may present some conditions where the API copyright is questionable, but the basis is fairly clear [until muddied by legalities]. JAVA was conceived as a way of creating a level field and consistent field for programming applications which could be used over all platforms. The machine behind the API’s has to meet a set of tests to ensure 100% compatibility. Anyone can write such a machine and it must be able to pass all tests to be called a Java Machine. But who can do that? Who provided the framework that made it possible? In this case it was SUN. SUN provided the tools to ensure conformity and issued licenses as needed to those wishing to use those API’s to produce machines which implemented the JAVA standards. SUN also allowed anyone to use the API’s without license but the result could not be called JAVA. Fair enough.

The other side of the coin is that users are free to program applications using the API with the assumption that the application will perform according to the specification of the API, regardless of who provides the machine and what platform is used to run the application. There is no charge for use of the API on this respect.

By ruling that that the API’s cannot be copyrighted, the decision creates a situation where there is no longer a guarantee that writing an application to the JAVA API’s is actually going to perform as expected. The specific case of Google and Android is limited in scope and probably presents a minimal problem [at the moment].

What happens tomorrow when the next “Google” comes along and does a new “90+%” implementation of the API’s and calls it JAVA. We have just split the JAVA community into three parts – SUN JAVA, ANDROID JAVA and NEWGEN JAVA, and the problem explodes.

We already see the problems of an uncontrolled ANDROID although that is not technically a JAVA issue.

What should happen in this case is that the language which Google has created should be called ANDROID [or some other name]. It can be promoted as being “similar” to JAVA, but cannot be called JAVA. Problem solved. No Copyright issue involved. That was the decision which should have happened.

Coming back to the Copyright Issue. If I write a new piece of work which is meant to be used by the community in order for that new work to be used, I must publish the interface specification [or API]. Without that, my work is useless. In order to benefit from my work, I need to be assured that my work is protected from being copied. And that protection is in making sure that the interface specification [API] cannot be hijacked by someone else. The work is my creation. The API is my creation and of necessity must be published in order to be useful. Copyrighted.

If I then wish to have my work more widely distributed, then I can decide to LICENSE my work to others for the purpose of getting a wider distribution. I allow others to use my API’s to create a Legal Copy of my work and users can choose to use my work or another creation of the work with the 100% guarantee that the results will be identical. My COPYRIGHT is preserved through the LICENSE process. I can choose to charge for the LICENSE, or I can be very generous and issue a free-of-charge license with restrictions and conditions. That is my decision to make.

The decision in the Google-Oracle case is troubling. The floodgates for unrestricted pirating of intellectual property has just been unleashed. If I were a member of the RIAA I would be choking. The Motion Picture Producers even more so.

But we can argue “fair use”. Another joke. As soon as the “fair use” involves essentially pirating followed by worldwide distribution and “fair use” has an entirely new meaning.

One can hope that a detailed reading of the Google-Oracle decision is a very very constrained and limited effect decision. None-the-less it is a decision based on the wrong question. And that problem lies squarely in Oracle’s lap.

  • AUSTRALIA 2012…..HOW SAD ……

    AUSTRALIA 2012…..HOW SAD ……

FROM A BLOODY GREEK BASTARD WHO MIGRATED TO AUSTRALIA IN THE LATE 1940s.

This is not a ”funny” ….. it’s what all of us are thinking but not saying ….. it’s the pink elephant in the room….

Nik Ziogopoulos states what is fact and what we all believe Nik would be in his 70’s at least

A GREAT PERSPECTIVE FROM A ‘NEW’ AUSTRALIAN –

    Nik Ziogopoulos

I  emigrated to Australia over 60 years ago – on the ship there were Poms, Italians (Spags), Germans (Huns), Austrian’s, Yugoslavs (Yuges), Poles, Ducchys, Ukes (Ukrainians) and Greeks.

(Note – All European people!!) all looking forward  to starting a new life in Australia .  I arrived with 30 quid in my pocket and that’s all I had to my name   Did I put my hand out??  Of course not – I  got a job and paid my way just like everyone else who came to this country back then.

Now,  it’s my taxes that subsidise these people who think they have Gods given right (read Allah) to come here and  criticize  those of us who have worked for the  country we now call home.

If  I didn’t like what I saw when I got here I would have  gone home – they have that same option.

If they don’t want to become Australian, they can GO  BACK TO WHERE THEY CAME FROM

    – WE CERTAINLY DON’T NEED THEM  HERE!

    When  will this stop?

They want 2 of their own public holidays, because Christians have Christmas, Easter & Good  Friday.

They force our children to eat Halal Meat Pies and Sausage Rolls from the school canteens, so the Muslim kids can feel more Aussie. We were not consulted about this change – they just forced it on us.

Our  foods are slowly all becoming Halal foods, our cheeses, chocolates and even good old Sanitarium  foods.

Our  Government is ALLOWING this to happen. It has to stop now, while we still have some power to be able to stop it.

    Regarding Our National Anthem –

I  am  sorry, but after hearing they want to sing the  National Anthem in Arabic – enough is enough. Nowhere or at no other time in our nation’s history, did they sing it in Italian, Japanese, Polish, Irish (Celtic), German, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Greek, or any other language  ….  because of immigration.

It was written in English, and should be sung word for word the way it was written.

The  news broadcasts even gave the translation — not even close.

I am not sorry if this offends anyone, this is MY COUNTRY

IF THIS IS YOUR COUNTRY TOO – SPEAK UP BY PASSING THIS ALONG
I am  not against  immigration, just come through like everyone else.  Get a sponsor; have a place to lay your head; have a job; pay your taxes, live by the rules

AND LEARN THE LANGUAGE as all other immigrants have in the past –

    and  LONG LIVE Australia !

    Think about this:

If you don’t want support this for fear of offending  someone

    YOU’RE PART OF THE PROBLEM!!!!

Will we still be the Country of Choice and still be Australia if we continue like this –

to make the changes forced on us by the people from other countries

who  have come to live in Australia because it is their Country of Choice?

    Think  about  it!

IMMIGRANTS  –   NOT  AUSTRALIANS  –   MUST ADAPT

It is Time for Australia to Speak up!

    PS:
This post is of course from an Australian perspective, but it is very perceptive of almost any country. To put it in reverse, if English[Australian] speaking people were to emigrate en-masse to another non-English speaking country and try to force the Australian Culture on the new home country, just how far would it get?  If any person desires to migrate to a new country, for whatever reason, one of the requirements is to respect and adapt to that new home. Adapt to the language, adapt to the environment, adapt to the culture and become part of the new – and not bring the baggage from the old. That is not to say to drop the heritage and culture from the homeland. There is much benefit from a diverse mix of cultures, but not to convert the recipient country to the exiting country.

    The concept is universal.

  • COMMENT FROM ROSS GREENWOOD: “Reality pill needed for Australians”

    A lesson in Budgeting:

    In USA today:

    Lesson # 1:

    Why the U.S. was downgraded:

    * U.S. Tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000
    * Fed budget: $3,820,000,000,000
    * New debt: $1,650,000,000,000
    * National debt: $14,271,000,000,000                                                                                                                                                * Recent budget cuts: $38,500,000,000

Let’s now remove 8 zeros and pretend it’s a household budget:
    Annual family income: $21,700
    * Money the family spent: $38,200
    * New debt on the credit card: $16,500
    * Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710
    * Total budget cuts: $385

    Got It ?????

    OK, now Lesson # 2:

Here’s another way to look at the Debt Ceiling:

Let’s say, you come home from work and find there has been a sewer
backup in your neighbourhood … and your home has sewage all the way up to
    your ceilings.
What do you think you should do?

Raise the ceilings, or pump out the (ummmm) “effluent”?

    Lesson # 3 :

    in Australia today

Right now the Federal Government is at pains to tell everyone – including us,
the mug-punters, and the International Monetary Fund, that it will not exceed
    its own, self-imposed, borrowing limits.

How much?    $200 billion.   And here’s a worry.

If you work in a bank’s money market operation; or if you are a politician,
the millions turn into billions and it rolls off the tip of the tongue a bit
too easily. But every dollar that is borrowed, some time, has to be repaid.
By you, by me and by the rest of the country.

Just after 5 o’clock tonight I did a bit of math for Jason Morrison (Sydney
radio presenter). But it’s so staggering its worth repeating now.

First thought: Gillard, Swan, Wong, and before that Rudd, and all of the Labor
Cabinet call these temporary borrowings, a “temporary deficit”.

Remember Those Words :  TEMPORARY DEFICIT.

The total Government debt will end up around $200 billion.
So here’s a very basic calculation… I used a home loan calculator to work
    it out….. it’s that simple..
$200 billion is two hundred thousand million dollars.

The current 10 year Government bond rate is 4.67 per cent. I worked the loan
out over a period of 20 years. Now here’s where it gets scary …. really
    scary.

The repayments on $200 billion come to more than one and a quarter billion
dollars – every month – for 20 years. It works out that we – as taxpayers – will
be repaying $15.4 billion in interest and principal every year .. $733 for
every man woman and child – every year.

The total interest bill over the 20 years is – get this – $108 billion.

Remember, this is a Government that just 4 years ago had NO debt. NO debt.

In fact, it had enough money to create the Future Fund, to pay the future
liabilities of public servants’ superannuation, and it had enough to stick
$20 billion into the Building Australia Fund …..

A note was sent to me, which explains that the six leading members of the
Government, from Ms Gillard down, have a collective work experience of 181
years, but only 13 years in the private sector.

If you take out of those 13 years the number that were spent as trade union
lawyers, 11 years, only two years were spent in the private sector.

So out of those 181 years:

    – no years spent running their own business
    – no years spent starting their own business
    – no years spent as a director of a family business or a company
    – no years as a director of a public company
    – no years in a senior position in a public company
    – no years in a senior position in a private company
    – no years working in corporate finance
    – no years in corporate or business restructuring
    – no years working in or with a bank
    – no years of experience in the capital markets
    – no years in a stock-broking firm
    – no years in negotiating debt facilities with banks
    – no years running a small business
    – no years at the World Bank or IMF or OECD
    – no years in Treasury or Finance.

But these people have plunged Australia into unprecedented debt.

Well, in a way you can’t blame them.
It’s clear the electorate did not do their homework, because the Government
    is there by right.

Ah, but they are Labor and people vote for them because Labor is good for
    the working family – right???

If you have read this you may like to pass it on to your friends to help
educate them a little as you, them and I, will be repaying the above

    PS
    And as a footnote:

We wonder about the situation in Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Greece. And perhaps now France, and Italy.

But all is not bad, perhaps. In times of a recession, or rather larger recessions, government hep is needed and that is where those reserves help get people through it. But it does need a degree of common sense to work well. [Remember the US Bush years of taking a surplus and creating a massive deficit, which of course is the fault of the successor government!]

  • What’s in a BAR CODE

Bar CodesCheck this out at the check out !!!!!!

A week or so ago Current Affair [Australia] did a doco on frozen vegetables imported from New Zealand . As it turns out if it is a Coles or Woollies home brand there is a more than good chance that the product has come from China . Products made by McCain’s, Birdseye and other supposed reputable companies from New Zealand are now purchasing vegie products from China and selling that product under  their name.

Basically check where it is produced by the comments on the back of the pack and if it says produced from New Zealand and Imported product it has Chinese vegies in it. Put it back on the shelf. I would even go as far as to say even if it has product of New Zealand I would be suspect about where those vegies in that pack come from. I suppose to play it safe unless it has been grown and packed in Australia stay away from it unless you don’t mind digesting poisons.

    For your info.

    Pretty scary stuff!!

Learn from BARCODESThis will cheer you up hope you aren’t having chicken for dinner

Please Remember…….the Australian barcode prefix is 93

PLEASE NOTE – if you love Australian produce and the thought of keeping jobs here, AND you like to eat healthy foods and buy quality products, then please read on. Please also note the Australian barcode prefix is 93.
    DANGEROUS IMPORTED FOODS
There are no food inspection regulations of foods grown or processed in China , Vietnam , Hong Kong or Thailand .Other world countries are scared of China making ‘black hearted goods’, but can you differentiate which one is made in Australia , the USA , Philippines , Taiwan or China ? For your Information … the first 3 digits of the barcode is the country code where-in the product was made.
    Example:
all barcodes that start with 690; 691 through to 695 are all MADE IN CHINA.

4 71 is Made in Taiwan .This is our right to know, but our governments and related departments never educate the public, therefore we have to RESCUE OURSELVES.Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products ‘made in china’, so they don’t show from which country it is made.  However, you may now refer to the barcode.Remember, if the first 3 digits are 690 through to 695, then it is Made in China .  Don’t forget, Hong Kong is now China , too.
    00 ~ 13 USA & CANADA
    30 ~ 37 FRANCE
    40 ~ 44 GERMANY
    49 ~ JAPAN
    50 ~ UK
    57 ~ Denmark
    64 ~ Finland
    76 ~ Switzerland and Liechtenstein
    93 ~ Australia
    628 ~ Saudi-Arabian
    629 ~ United Arab Emirates
    740 ~ 745 – Central America
All 480 Codes are Made in the Philippines

DO NOT BUY FOOD PROCESSED IN CHINA , HONG KONG , VIETNAM or THAILAND !!!  Remember, there are no food inspection regulations!!!WATCH WHAT YOU BUY. ESPECIALLY ‘HIGHLINER’ FISH PRODUCTS; all come from China , even though the box says ‘product of Canada ‘, it is from Chinaand ‘processed’ in Canada , that is, only  the coating is added and packaged in Canada.  The fish are raised in pens using chemicals that are banned in Canada as cancer causing but legal in China . This was exposed on CBC TV’s ‘Marketplace’.Please think before buying anything from China . Avoid buying all processed food packaged in China …Anything goes! We just don’t know what else is in those packages. Unlike the United States and CANADA (and Australia , Germany , France , Italy , Great Britian et al) China does not have laws regulating food processing. Basically, do not buy any processed food from China .  This includes Hong Kong. MANY companies are using a Hong Kong address to avoid this type of image reputation.

Send to as many people as possible.  Do NOT buy food originating in China(or Vietnam orThailand)! Take the time to read the labels and look for country of origin!
    Your Health is at Stake!

    REMEMBER THE AUSTRALIAN BARCODE PREFIX????

    IT IS 93

    WANWAN’s COMMENTS:

The above article is pretty forthright in its views and some of the views are probably somewhat extreme, and not necessarily always true. Sometimes, but not always.

We have seen health scares on a number of products coming from CHINA for example, but also remember that there have been some pretty decent scares also in the USA for products grown, processed and packed in the USA. The problem seems to be universal.

With regard to Vietnam some of the comments are mis-placed. Vietnam DOES have some pretty rigid rules and inspections to maintain food quality. For the longest time there were restrictions on the import of US Beef, now relaxed. Where possible, health inspectors DO inspect closely food production facilities attempting to keep quality high. Exporting food from Vietnam can be difficult, again due to stringent health checks and requirements.

This is not to say there are not ways of “accommodating” these regulations. Again, that is somewhat universal.

But the TV show “A Current Affair” does unearth some pretty extreme cases in all aspects of life. This food presentation is no exception. But remember to take a big picture look when considering information of this kind.

CAN THE AUSTRALIA SURVIVE GIVEN THE FOLLOWING?

    WAN

The folks who are getting free stuff, don’t like the folks who are paying for the free stuff, because the folks who are paying for the free stuff can no longer afford to pay for both the free stuff and their own stuff.

The folks who are paying for the free stuff want the free stuff to stop, and the folks who are getting the free stuff want even more free stuff on top of the free stuff they are already getting!

Now…  The people who are forcing the people to pay for the free stuff have told the people who are RECEIVING the free stuff, that the people who are PAYING for the free stuff, are being mean, prejudiced, and racist.

So…  The people who are GETTING the free stuff have been convinced they need to hate the people who are paying for the free stuff by the people who are forcing some people to pay for their free stuff, and giving them the free stuff in the first place.

We have let the free stuff giving go on for so long that there are now more people getting free stuff than paying for the free stuff.

Now understand this: all great democracies have committed financial suicide somewhere between 200 and 250 years after being founded.  The reason?  The voters figured out they could vote themselves money from the treasury by electing people who promised to give them money from the treasury in exchange for electing them.  Thomas Jefferson said it best:  “Democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not”.

The number of people now getting free stuff outnumbers the people paying for the free stuff.  We have one chance to change that at the next election in 2013 will we?   Failure to change that spells the end of Australia, as we know it.
