  • Getting rid of our dog [Norbert]

    Free to a Good Home

Our house was broken into last night by two robbers who locked me in the bathroom, and then proceeded to steal all they could carry.  Our watchdog “Killer” did not alert us at all, and for this reason we are giving him away.

We no longer want this dog.  We’ve decided on installing an electric fence and detection devices with alarms.  They’re cheaper to maintain and definitely more reliable.

For those interested in adopting this dog, please send an e-mail immediately.

Killer is fun to hang out with, but otherwise pretty useless.

A recent photo of Killer is included below.

‘Killer’ is a Norwegian Beer Hound…

… you can tell he is 100% purebred.

  • An Aussie Love story

About eight years ago a wild Australian Sulphur Crested Cockatoo flew into a car and broke its wing. The motorist took it to the Vet in Nerang, Queensland, who had to amputate the wing.

We adopted her – for which we needed a National Parks and Wildlife permit – and kept her in a cage outside where she was often visited by wild Cockatoos.

One of the things that impressed us was how she would push lettuce leaves through the bars of the cage, offering food to visitors. Last Sunday she again had a visitor.

As usual he spent a lot of time sitting on the cage with a tamper proof latch.

There was a lot of talking and grooming. A bloke has to look presentable when courting a bird!

Things got interesting when he approached the front door…

The clever fellow figured out how to undo the tamper proof latch!

He opened the door for a lot of mutual grooming and food sharing…

Oooh that’s nice! Scratch a bit more on that side, dear…

He was not shy to get into the cage and would go in and out a number of times.

    They mated!

Later on, the whole extended family came visiting but the special mate was back every day so far.

We leave the door open during the day but if we forget, it doesn’t matter – cockatoos have intelligence that rival primates. Because she has only one wing, she stays inside or just sits on top. Guess what happened next…
    The Babies
At first it seemed as though he was annoyed because she did not fly off with him and he would squawk a lot. He soon came to understand that she could not fly so he just stayed. However, she was no longer returning to her cage. The two of them would stay in the trees in our garden and because the yard is well fenced, they were safe from dogs but the neighbour’s cat is not kept indoors at night and we often have to chase it away. Chances are the cat would come off second best in a confrontation with a Cockatoo but at night cats remain a danger because they could stalk a sleeping bird on the ground.

Cockatoos make their nests in hollow logs but we noticed the male hard at work digging a hole under a clump of Lilly Pilly trees. We put down a hollow log for them but they just ignored us. The nest he dug was a hole with a short tunnel leading off to where she laid her eggs. Once there were eggs in the nest, the male became extremely aggressive. You better not get near the nest or he will take chunks of flesh from your foot. It was difficult to take these pictures because I literally had to steal them while running away from the male.

We kept a vigil to see how things were progressing.
They took turns incubating the eggs and covering the tunnel.
After about three weeks, the eggs hatched. Have a careful look at this picture and try to spot the bit of yellow fluff.

Whenever Mum & Dad Cockatoo leave the nest, we try to get a look but you have to do it while running because Dad Cockatoo is chasing you!

Second lap running around the Lilly Pilly trees!

Well, I hope his mother thinks he is pretty and eventually I might think so too but at the moment, both of them just look like pink balls with a bit of yellow fluff.

How’s that for a true Aussie Love Story???? Definitely has the aaawwwww factor!
  • What’s in a BAR CODE

Bar CodesCheck this out at the check out !!!!!!

A week or so ago Current Affair [Australia] did a doco on frozen vegetables imported from New Zealand . As it turns out if it is a Coles or Woollies home brand there is a more than good chance that the product has come from China . Products made by McCain’s, Birdseye and other supposed reputable companies from New Zealand are now purchasing vegie products from China and selling that product under  their name.

Basically check where it is produced by the comments on the back of the pack and if it says produced from New Zealand and Imported product it has Chinese vegies in it. Put it back on the shelf. I would even go as far as to say even if it has product of New Zealand I would be suspect about where those vegies in that pack come from. I suppose to play it safe unless it has been grown and packed in Australia stay away from it unless you don’t mind digesting poisons.

    For your info.

    Pretty scary stuff!!

Please Remember…….the Australian barcode prefix is 93

PLEASE NOTE – if you love Australian produce and the thought of keeping jobs here, AND you like to eat healthy foods and buy quality products, then please read on. Please also note the Australian barcode prefix is 93.
    DANGEROUS IMPORTED FOODS
There are no food inspection regulations of foods grown or processed in China , Vietnam , Hong Kong or Thailand .Other world countries are scared of China making ‘black hearted goods’, but can you differentiate which one is made in Australia , the USA , Philippines , Taiwan or China ? For your Information … the first 3 digits of the barcode is the country code where-in the product was made.
    Example:
all barcodes that start with 690; 691 through to 695 are all MADE IN CHINA.

4 71 is Made in Taiwan .This is our right to know, but our governments and related departments never educate the public, therefore we have to RESCUE OURSELVES.Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products ‘made in china’, so they don’t show from which country it is made.  However, you may now refer to the barcode.Remember, if the first 3 digits are 690 through to 695, then it is Made in China .  Don’t forget, Hong Kong is now China , too.
    00 ~ 13 USA & CANADA
    30 ~ 37 FRANCE
    40 ~ 44 GERMANY
    49 ~ JAPAN
    50 ~ UK
    57 ~ Denmark
    64 ~ Finland
    76 ~ Switzerland and Liechtenstein
    93 ~ Australia
    628 ~ Saudi-Arabian
    629 ~ United Arab Emirates
    740 ~ 745 – Central America
All 480 Codes are Made in the Philippines

DO NOT BUY FOOD PROCESSED IN CHINA , HONG KONG , VIETNAM or THAILAND !!!  Remember, there are no food inspection regulations!!!WATCH WHAT YOU BUY. ESPECIALLY ‘HIGHLINER’ FISH PRODUCTS; all come from China , even though the box says ‘product of Canada ‘, it is from Chinaand ‘processed’ in Canada , that is, only  the coating is added and packaged in Canada.  The fish are raised in pens using chemicals that are banned in Canada as cancer causing but legal in China . This was exposed on CBC TV’s ‘Marketplace’.Please think before buying anything from China . Avoid buying all processed food packaged in China …Anything goes! We just don’t know what else is in those packages. Unlike the United States and CANADA (and Australia , Germany , France , Italy , Great Britian et al) China does not have laws regulating food processing. Basically, do not buy any processed food from China .  This includes Hong Kong. MANY companies are using a Hong Kong address to avoid this type of image reputation.

Send to as many people as possible.  Do NOT buy food originating in China(or Vietnam orThailand)! Take the time to read the labels and look for country of origin!
    Your Health is at Stake!

    REMEMBER THE AUSTRALIAN BARCODE PREFIX????

    IT IS 93

    WANWAN’s COMMENTS:

The above article is pretty forthright in its views and some of the views are probably somewhat extreme, and not necessarily always true. Sometimes, but not always.

We have seen health scares on a number of products coming from CHINA for example, but also remember that there have been some pretty decent scares also in the USA for products grown, processed and packed in the USA. The problem seems to be universal.

With regard to Vietnam some of the comments are mis-placed. Vietnam DOES have some pretty rigid rules and inspections to maintain food quality. For the longest time there were restrictions on the import of US Beef, now relaxed. Where possible, health inspectors DO inspect closely food production facilities attempting to keep quality high. Exporting food from Vietnam can be difficult, again due to stringent health checks and requirements.

This is not to say there are not ways of “accommodating” these regulations. Again, that is somewhat universal.

But the TV show “A Current Affair” does unearth some pretty extreme cases in all aspects of life. This food presentation is no exception. But remember to take a big picture look when considering information of this kind.

  • Australian Election commentary

CAN THE AUSTRALIA SURVIVE GIVEN THE FOLLOWING?

    WAN

The folks who are getting free stuff, don’t like the folks who are paying for the free stuff, because the folks who are paying for the free stuff can no longer afford to pay for both the free stuff and their own stuff.

The folks who are paying for the free stuff want the free stuff to stop, and the folks who are getting the free stuff want even more free stuff on top of the free stuff they are already getting!

Now…  The people who are forcing the people to pay for the free stuff have told the people who are RECEIVING the free stuff, that the people who are PAYING for the free stuff, are being mean, prejudiced, and racist.

So…  The people who are GETTING the free stuff have been convinced they need to hate the people who are paying for the free stuff by the people who are forcing some people to pay for their free stuff, and giving them the free stuff in the first place.

We have let the free stuff giving go on for so long that there are now more people getting free stuff than paying for the free stuff.

Now understand this: all great democracies have committed financial suicide somewhere between 200 and 250 years after being founded.  The reason?  The voters figured out they could vote themselves money from the treasury by electing people who promised to give them money from the treasury in exchange for electing them.  Thomas Jefferson said it best:  “Democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not”.

The number of people now getting free stuff outnumbers the people paying for the free stuff.  We have one chance to change that at the next election in 2013 will we?   Failure to change that spells the end of Australia, as we know it.

    AUSTRALIAN ELECTION 2013 IS COMING
